Morus alba?  The smaller ones I've pried out of the ground are rather
tap-rooted.  Can't imagine moving a large tree, unless this root habit
changes with age.

tc, s.WI, where we CAN transplant budding things today because a week of rain
forecast.

I live in MA, and all the plants are pushing their buds. This isn't a good
time to bare-root anything you want to survive. I would either wait until
fall dormancy or use a tree-spade if either is a possibility. Because
Mulberries are very tough, I would guess a large tree-spade would work, even
though it isn't dormant.

Of course, if the mulberry-owner plans to get rid of the mulberry this
spring, and you can't rent a tree-spade, sure, give it a try. It might
survive, and as Deb says, what have you got to lose?

Thanks - well, the guy wants me to help pay to dig it out - $50 - and he
needs it out now, which means it couldn't be transplanted directly into the
new location for a month. As you know, we've had some cold weather up here
but I'm seeing the buds break now, too. But I saw I can get a younger one
for $29 at Raintree Nursery, so may just wait until I've scoped out the new
property. I have an acre in front to plant my "mini-orchard" and am going
to be researching dwarf varieties this summer.

BTW, Ginda, my new place is on Main Street in Kingston - just 2 blocks off
of HWY 3. Wasn't the best place for the soil, but perfect for striper
fishing!

Thanks,
Lori
