Hello Doug,
There are several nurseries selling Moorpark as zone 4, but I know that that's a little optimistic and it's probably a bit of a risk. I can't find a a Canadian supplier for Precious other than Ken's Green Barn which are sold out very early in the season. And no Westcots available around here either.
Maybe I'll take your advice and go for the Morden 604. The site I have chosen is a sandy slope, with protection from winter winds, but which does receive quite a bit of afternoon sun although maybe not until mid spring.
By the way I spoke to Ken a couple of years ago and he advised me against planting an apricot! So maybe I should be listening to him!
Thanks for the advice!
And Ginda, thanks for the encouragement!
Caren.

Caren, I don't think that Moorpark apricot would be hardy with you.
I don't think that Ken Taylor on Ile Perrot has had much difficulty
keeping hardy apricots alive, but he has a sandy hill with excellent air
drainage. He told me he gets a good crop about 2 years out of 5.
Given well drained sandy soil I think that Westcot or Morden 604 would
do OK for you, maybe Precious. The first two were bred at Morden, SW
Manitoba. The last was found at Creemore, Ontario, south of Georgian Bay.
Planting in a spot with shelter from SW low-angle afternoon winter sun
will help.

Boy, now I am really confused! After about 4 years of deliberating, I[snip]
had just made up my mind to take the plunge and buy an Apricot ( was
going to go for a Moorpark). We've had a horrible spring though,
yo-yoing back and forth from 24deg C to below freezing. Everything is
late by at least 2 weeks. I was worried about how an apricot would have
fared.
Then I came across this thread and my courage is slowly disappating. But
I do LOVE apricots so I'm probably still stupid enough to try.... I
don't know of anyone growing them around here so we'll have to see how
it works out. Hopefully I won't be reporting this time next year about
how bad it turned out!
