No, kaki persimmons graft successfully on D. lotus and D. tomentosa too.

I've seen 50+ year-old D.kaki selections, on what I presume are native 60-C
D.virginiana rootstock, back home in AL, with no graft rejection.
Similarly, I suspect that the Russell Smith/Wye plantings, which have been
in existence for some decades - some with minimal to no care - are on
D.virginiana rootstock
Borer damage on persimmon in my orchard has been primarily associated with
older/larger trees - all of which are D.virginiana selections grafted onto
whatever D.virginiana rootstock I had handy at the time(chromosome number
unknown) - and borer entry sites were not associated with the graft union.
None of my kaki grafts are at the 15-yr mark, and the current oldest
survivor - probably at the 13 yr mark, now - is grafted about 9 ft up in
what was a very vigorous D.virginia resprout after I bush-hogged over a 2"
diameter seedling.

My D. kaki have not been grafted over 15 years, just 7 years, so this may
not be relevant, but they are on wild D. virginiana. I am almost certain
that we do not have the 90-c persimmons here in TN, just the 60-c. They are
doing great with no sign of rejection. My D. kaki are astringent types
(Hachiya and Chocolate) plus one hybrid (Rosseyonka). The graft unions are
very normal looking, and if not for differences in the bark, it would be
hard to really see the unions.

Group:
For all who grow Asian persimmon (D. kaki) and have had their trees for OVER
15 years that are on either D. lotus or D. virginiana rootstock....
Please describe your LONG-term experience with Asian persimmon on D. lotus
(date-plum) or D. virginiana (Americana persimmon) roostock. List cultivar,
roostock (D. lotus or D. virginiana), and age of tree/graft.
Some say that their trees reject after 10 to 15 years; I suspect either
graft rejection due to incongruence between the scion and understock,
eventually being made manifest OR perhaps... borers, that are attracted to
the scaring between the two - which could, if so, be treated.
Notes: D. kaki and D. lotus are 90-chromosome species, yet some describe a
difference in graft-compatability (inter-specific) between astringent D.
kaki and D. lotus and non-astringent D. kaki and D. lotus. D. virginiana is
either 60-c or 90-c (northern strain); only the 90-c strain will be suitable
for D. kaki, being of like number. I'm not sure if I recall that some
cultivars (astringent or non-astringent) are not suitable for being placed
upon D. virginiana.
Thanks,
Steve; NJ 7a/6b
