Regarding your grafts, I would allow some growth from the rootstock, just to
give strength to the scion growth. That's what I read from a number of
sources before I began grafting last year.
Last summer I did some chip bud grafts and will keep about 4" of twig growth
from my Geneva 30 rootstocks thru the season while the scionwood develops.
When they go dormant, I'll trim the rootstock twigs/branches entirely. I will
do likewise with some other grafts I've begun and hope to finish this month.
Like everything else, keep an eye on things as the season progresses, you may
need to take other action later.
