Jim:

I'm not sure how Prunus spp. take to it and grafting add another complication but have you considered pollarding your North Star - cutting it off above the graft line and letting it regenerate. For those trees that take to coppicing (and some fruit trees included), the process can greatly extend their lifespans. Does anyone have any personal experience in coppicing Prunus spp. (deliberate or accidental)?
