Hi
I got a pleasant suprise at local hardware store that recently opened-
evidently they have a different "feed" for their trees than what I have been
seeing- many different types of plums- and PEARS
Of course, I got the Keiffer. But they also had Pineapple! I have never
seen that for sale before! snatched that, and Moonglow, which I think is a
fairly recent cultivar, isn't it?
Any ideas about the order of ripening?
There was some discussion of Pineapple on here earlier, and it was on that,
that I bought the tree. Is it strictly a cooking pear? or can it be eaten
out of hand? ripening off the tree on the shelf?
I saw it mentioned in a nursery on the Florida/Georgia line- they said "this
is the pear your grandmother grew" -- well, they didn't know my grandmother,
for sure. She spent most of her life bemoaning the fact that good yard help
was so hard to find. ha ha! She NEVER understood my need to dig holes and
stick something in it; but she was patient, hoping that I would outgrow
this.
If YOUR grandmother grew this pear, what exactly did she do with it?
Also, I think the Moonglow is a lot softer than the other 2, so I am
guessing it's the best bet for eating out of hand.
can it be dried??
how does one go about drying a pear? do they need to be peeled first?
dipped in ascorbic acid, or lemon juice?
questions, questions..
can't wait to dig another hole and stick something in it.
