they did not grow well for me in VA.
HOWEVER, you might want to try a native chinquipin, which DOES.
My grandaddy was a logger, and they were his favorite nut (beside me) and that's saying something.
He said that he would mark the bushes, and check them often, as squirrels would clean them out overnight.
that's another good sign.
