Michele, I heard there are a few commercial growers in Oregon who have imported varieties from China and are testing them now.  The varieties they brought in are not generally available, but there is supposedly one variety called Lantai Jujuli in the ARS collection.  I am growing that as well as several seedlings (I just planted seed from market pears).  None of them have fruited yet.  The trees grow like asian pears so I would say that is the majority of genetic material.

The fragrant pears I have eaten were interesting and unique, but they were not nearly as flavorful as a good asian or european pear.  But, perhaps they were not highest quality.

Hi all,
I recently bought an imported Chinese Fragrant Pear.
Does anyone grow this?

I was unfamiliar with it, but a search came up with this in a 2006 NY Times article:

“In a study published in 2001, however, scientists analyzed the variety’s molecular markers and determined that it is a complex hybrid of the two main European and Asian species, along with Pyrus armeniacifolia, a little-known Xinjiang species with small fruits and leaves similar to apricot foliage.”

Melissa’s produce lists it; it is grown in the Xinjiang area of northwest China, which has a dry continental (cold winter) climate.

Just curious!
