I have also enjoyed reading all the opinions about what apples people
like to grow. Our orchard is located in far north Georgia near the
Tennessee line in zone 7a. The orchard had an early spring resulting in
all the apples maturing ahead of schedule. Our best (normally) late
apples have been Autumn Rose Fuji, Goldrush & Pink Lady. We are picking
all of these this week; which is about 3 weeks ahead of schedule.
Goldrush were also picked early due to an unusually high incidence of
sunburn this year.

We like Autumn Rose because it has a moderately complex flavor for a
Fuji(more than Auvil Early and less than Banning Fuji), good color,
medium size and is the latest of our 6 cultivars of Fuji. Our Goldrush
has outstanding flavor, large size, poor finish and good disease
resistance. Unlike prior years, the ones that have a bit of sunburn on a
golden background are actually good to eat right off the tree. The Pink
Lady have a great sweet-tart flavor and beautiful finish to match.

We will be planting several other late season varieties such as
Sundowner, Crimsoncrisp and Kumeu Braeburn this winter on Bud 9; so I
will report back how those do in another year. I am also curious about
certain comments that some "Northern" apples will not grow or taste good
in the South. I test planted 5 trees of several varieties of these
cultivars over the last few years and have been able to grow all of the
ones tried. I know this is very subjective, but the Honeycrisp out of
our orchard were the best I have ever tasted. The color was mostly green
due to the lack of cool nights, but the texture was outstanding. I would
like to hear about any other success stories growing "Northern" apples
in the South and what varieties work best for you.

Best Regards,
Jim Freeman
