I saw the posts on hardy kiwis. I have 5 varieties and have been propagating them out for years, planting them in orchards around central VA. I consistently get fruit on 2nd or 3rd year vines. You have to prune them. I put a pamphlet on my website that covers this issue among others. They are frost sensitive, so that is something you have to plan for in terms of location.

Am now getting the first batch of hardy kiwis from some a. arguta vines I planted almost 20 years ago & finally found a male (Meader) to pollinate it. They are twice the size of the a. kolomikta fruits & have very strong hints of pineapple. Skins are tougher & more present than the kolomikta as well. Virtually impossible to tell if they are ripe by sight, have to squeeze each one. These unpruned fines are grown up a few ash trees & I see some fruit up to 30 - 40 feet up.

It took me 8 years to get fruit. I didn't realize that the new growth in spring is as tender as tomato. It contains the flower buds. If you cover them if they sprout before a last frost, they could make it though.. Well worth the trouble. We pick them hard and let them ripen at room temp. or keep them for a week or two in the frig. to slow ripening, bring out when you want them to ripen. They're getting quite popular at the local farmer's market. Hector black, zone 6 middle TN

I had the same problem this spring Hector. My kiwi's lateral shoots
developed early, then were frost bitten and lost. Only a few
regenerated later in the spring and did not flower.

Why wouldn't you thaw them and use a standard juicer, like a Breville?

Hi Guys;
Just another failure report.
I tried Air Layering on Wolf River apple and Smoky Saskatoon.
Both failed miserably. 2 branches each.
Is there a list of plants that respond well to Air Layering?

I dug out my biggest one I have this spring.? Had it for 10 years and it only occasionally flowered.? The male I have of the same age has never flowered.
However, I have the variety Issai that flowers and produces fruit every year.? It is self fertile, but some years drops all the fruit before it matures.? It is far less vigorous than the other ones I have.

Pat, it's all about getting a male/female match... the first 3 males I had
didn't work so that chewed up 12-15 years of waiting.. the meader male
flowered in 3 years (not a lot) but I think by next year it'll really start
putting out.

Can anyone verify this is the eatable Oyster Mushroom? We had a rain about three weeks ago and this came up on a dead maple tree. The large one is better than 12 inches across.
It seems to still be growing and the flesh is tender.
