Red Baron! it grows well here in zone 3, bears at an early age, looks and tastes great- tart sweet and intense. Also great for cooking.

I can't speak for how well they will grow for you, but:

1) I agree with Claude that Cortland is better than Redcort, and that Cortland is a fine tasty apple where it grows well.

2) I also agree with Claude that a really good Cortland is tastier than the somewhat bland Honey Crisp. But Honey Crisp is a really pleasant, easy apple to eat. It is sweet, crunchy, and the flavor it has is nice, if not as strong as some other apples. It's also worth mentioning both that it sells at a substantial premium at my local farmers' market and that it keeps pretty well in the fridge.

Also, the other apple that fetches a big premium here is the Macoun. I gather it doesn't grow in other parts of the country, but it grows well in central MA and NH, so there's a decent chance it will grow for you. It doesn't keep very well, but when fresh and ripe, it has great flavor, and superb texture for eating out of hand. It sort of goes "snap" with each bite. It's one of the parents of the more widely adapted Honey Crisp and the source of that apple's crunch.

Hello Addicts;

I'm going to add 12 more apple trees to my orchard in Maine, zone 4.
My reason for writing is to check with you all for 'Horror Stories', or

Roadside market. Leftovers will go into the cider tank.

What do you favor ????

Redcort I would prefer the standard Cortland - It is absolutely great here.

Honey Crisp Grows very well, beautiful apple, productive, hardy. My
children love it, but I think it lacks flavor.
Zabergau Reinette
Prairie Spy Very unproductive, but the few apples are of good quality
Roxbury Russet Has died here, did not seem hardy

Fire Away !!!
