I do this everywhere I can, my friends save all their cardboard for me and the local landscaping company brings me wood chips and leaves.

Have you considered mulch for keeping weeds down? We put down cardboard with a layer of lawn clippings on top, and nothing is growing through that. Around our blueberries, we have pine needles, and we've had no weeds but a few pine seedlings.
