Bob is correct glyphosate can be absorbed by smooth bark.

Additionally, commercial literature recommend not applying glyphosate too
late in the summer even at the base of mature trees. The rough bark still
absorbs enough of the chemical to translocate it to the roots. Generally
not a problem, but as summer progresses, the trees start to store more
carbohydrates in the roots. The small amount of glyphosate is translocated
to the roots with the carbohydrates and does more damage. I don't think
tree loss is an issue in this case, as much as loss of vigor, health and
yield.

Chris Doll just mentioned in the last IL Fruit Newsletter, that July 1 is
the cut-off date for glyphosate in orchards in the Midwest.

I'm sure there are lot's of options for non-bearing orchards, but around
here gramoxone (Paraquat) is used. Although it will kill any foliage it
touches, it won't translocate to the roots.
