I see autumn olive seedlings pretty frequently in fencelines/ditches here in
town - and especially in the neighborhoods here around my office, as there
were some fairly extensive plantings of it as hedgerows/visual barriers on a
couple of large properties just up the street.

I see an occasional seedling here and there - again, mostly in unsprayed
fencelines - on my farm - a good 7 miles from town.

Back home in AL, at the intersection of the Piedmont & Coastal plain,
'Bronze Eleagnus/Russian Olive', E.pungens, seedlings were pretty common -
and not in disturbed soil so much as they were throughout the understory of
upland woods and creekbottom forests.

"If autumn olive were to move in, I don't think anything would stop it
till a forest grew up through it and shaded it out."

Mine grows quit nicely in the understory. There are some sites where it
is growing and spreading vigorously, yet in almost complete shade
provided by 80 foot hardwoods (some dappled light reaches the forest
floor). The deer seem to leave it alone, so it has little competition
at that level.
