John, I'm told that the more you dig sunchokes, the more they spread. If you leave a patch alone for a few years it should go into decline on its own. Can't say from experience, but that's the information I have seen.

Subject: Re: [NAFEX] autumn olive Now "Invasive plants"
Donna,
Wow, do I agree with you about the Tartarian Honeysuckle. It seems very invasive here and I agree, quite useless.
I made the mistake of planting Jerusulem artichoke here about 10 years ago, several forms. All the forms, except for "Stampede" have died out or are close to it. However, my efforts to kill it are just barely adequate to keep it under control in my garden. It comes back every year. Despite vigorous efforts to get rid of it in the spring, I always end up with a harvest by late fall.
Regarding Apios, I have a single plant growing here for several years that has not spread. I went so far as to dig it up last year to see just a single bulb about 2" in diameter. I'm trying it in a location with more moisture. So far no seeding either. It might be that we are just a bit too cold for it here as I think I almost lost it a couple of times.
Another one to watch just might be Passiflora incarnata, Maypop. I've a couple of plants that keep coming back in new locations even though its status has gone from "encouraged" to "Ok if you don't get in the way"
