If you are talking about yellow grafting wax, it solidifies at room temperature. You can place the container over a mild heat source overnight and the wax softens to become more malleable. Under best circumstances, it is most unpleasant to use, I agree.
For grafting, I now use Parafilm which preserves moisture without the mess. I would highly recommend it.

This grafting discussion brings to mind a question that I have had. I
have used Doc Farwell's yellow grafting goop a couple of times, but I
find that I can't keep it from solidifying from one spring to the next,
even though the container is well sealed. Should I be expecting it to
be usable from year to year, or does it harden in the contain once the
bottle is opened? I don't use enough in a season to justify buying it
every spring, even a small container, since the shipping is so
expensive.
