Thanks for pointing me toward Luscious. Descriptions I'm reading make it
sound like a mystery pear someone shared with me last fall. It was small,
jucy and absolutely delicious. It looks like it might work for me if the
bloom time is about the same as pyrus ussuriensis, which I think it might
be. Does anyone know if the bloom times overlap?

Kathryn, the information you have seems pretty accurate. However, to my
taste at
least, Luscious is a much nicer `Ussurian Pear' (meaning it has at least
some ussuriensis in its background). If you want to go with Ure, look for
`Early Gold' which is a sport of Ure (or so I have been told) the fruit of
which in my experience is earlier, larger and better.
