I think they can be a good home-grown coconut substitute in areas too cold
for Parajubae. As far as where to find them, I suppose before I search
online I should search my yard. Nutsedges crop up in the yard and garden, I
just need to see if it's the yellow (chufa) or bitter purple. Could well be
both.

We've had an explosion of turkey population here in the Central Valley and
surrounding foothills; yes, they do very much like chufa.

We frequently planted chufa as a food source for wild turkey, when I
was a youngster growing up in UCLA(upper corner of lower Alabama),
and my BIL still plants them from time to time.
I always liked the sweet coconut-like flavor of the tubers, and
evidently, the turkey, deer, and racoons did as well.
Seed tubers were fairly expensive($3-$4/lb?), last time I priced any,
but they're easy to grow - we'd just disc up a patch, broadcast the
tubers, and disc 'em in. I'm sure dad applied some fertilizer, but I
don't have a clue as to how much.
