We frequently planted chufa as a food source for wild turkey, when I was a youngster growing up in UCLA(upper corner of lower Alabama), and my BIL still plants them from time to time.
I always liked the sweet coconut-like flavor of the tubers, and evidently, the turkey, deer, and racoons did as well.
Seed tubers were fairly expensive($3-$4/lb?), last time I priced any, but they're easy to grow - we'd just disc up a patch, broadcast the tubers, and disc 'em in. I'm sure dad applied some fertilizer, but I don't have a clue as to how much.
