The nuts are actually tasty (though a little on the bland side) and the have the advantage of being fairly soft when fresh or freshly thawed out. This means that they can give a somewhat meaty texture to stir-fries and the like. As pointed out, they have the reputation of having side effects when too many are eaten but that hasn't been a problem the few times that I've eaten them. Also, the nut does not smell like the flesh. In fact, if properly cleaned, the nut shell should have only a minimal odor to it.
