When you cut the tree down, if you will drill a hole in the stump and but salt petre in it and but a cork in the hole, the root will rot all the way down in a couple of years.

First you remove the tree. Then you persevere in removing all shoots and
parts roots that come with, systematically. You have to frequently remove
the shoots everytime shoots and leaves pop up. After three years, you can
usually overcome. There is energy stored in the roots which sends adventis
shoots and it is difficult to remove all roots even when you don't have a
berry patch on top to complicate matter.
If you don't remove the trees, there is no end to your root shoots.
If you keep the trees, then I suggest you move your berry patch.
