Thanks for the answer Hal. I actually figured this out yesterday by looking a lot closer at my kiwis that are already in the ground. And after reading around the net, there seems to be a universal consensus that success rate for rooting dormant cuttings is typically very low.
I've scored the cuttings beneath the bottom node, doused in rooting hormone, put them on a propagation mat & cover the cuttings with plastic. Now to figure out what the russian names mean.

The leaf scars will point down and there will be a tiny pinhole above the
scar, at least with the hardy types, where the bud will emerge. How are you
planning on rooting these? Dormant kiwi cuttings are difficult to root and
are usually grafted, then the green shoots are rooted later. It can be done,
but the success is very hit and miss. Applying bottom heat with the cuttings
in a cool spot generally gives the best results, as it keeps the buds
dormant long enough for roots to form before the cutting pushes new growth
and expends its energy. I have never had good success, but I have seen it
done successfully with some varieties. Kiwis are extremely easy to graft, so
if you have an established vine, save some cuttings for grafting in late
spring.
