In times past peach was a common rootstock for European plums, but with a twist. Because trees on peach were short lived, they were planted deep so the scion would root. In the days when "Italian" prunes were grown commercially in Oregon it wasn't unusual to find an old orchard that seemed to be solid seedlings but were actually all "Italian" suckers. The scions rooted and sent out all kinds of root suckers. It was possible to get own-rooted Italian, and other plum trees if you could find one of those old orchards.
