I tried field grafting C. mas with poor results. As a result, when I got some special scions I took them to Lucile Whitman
http://www.whitmanfarms.com/ who did bench grafts using a heat tube to callus the grafts. She got 100% take that way. The heat tube was in POMONA some years back and consists of a pvc pipe with a heat cable in it. Slits are cut in the pipe and just the graft goes in the slot. That warms it enough to callus without the stock or scion becoming active.

I'm going to grafting some C. mas named varieities this upcoming year. With all the discussion regarding grafting, can I ask for some advice on this topic? I've done apples with success but that was at least a decade ago. Any thought on type, temperature, etc. I'll be grafting between established small trees (3-8 years old) to lesson risk of loss of my collection. Last years poor spring resulted in the loss of two trees.
