You are correct, Doug. My mistake. Wealthy was the seedling Gideon
found. Duchess was one of the Russian apples imported in hope they'd be
adapted to the Upper Midwest.

Sam, I believe that you are thinking of "Wealthy" which Peter Gideon
bred. Duchess of Oldenburg certainly was very important for many years
after its importation and was a great boon to both farm families and
town dwellers in colder areas, especially for sauce and pie which were
more important in earlier times.
