If the ordinary form will do, I have it. Contact me offlist for photos.
Incidentally, the "thorns" are short sharp ended twigs, much like the "thorns" on juvenile pears. They are much less noticeable on the mature wood.

The USDA Germplasm Repository at Davis, California has the Prunus spinosa
subspecies Purpurea in its collection. You might be able to get scionwood
from them and graft you own tree. It's accession number is DPRU 0848 Prunus
spinosa purpurea. The purple leaves might make it more attractive and the
smaller thorns of this subspecies might be even better. I do not know if you
can get the scionwood from them but you can always try, there seem to be
some budget problems with the USDA Repositories; they keep loosing personnel
and programs.

Thanks so much for all the information, folks! Yep, I know it's
thorny, it suckers, the fruit's astringent. I want to try making sloe
gin from scratch, though. And I think it would make good preserves.
It was very interesting learning that it was part of the process of
breeding Prunus domestica. I had always assumed Prunus domestica
just came about naturally...
