The common cultivars 'Nero' and 'Viking' seem to be very widely adapted. I
have 'Nero' here, and it seems to be very tolerant of our hot humid summers,
so far. Aronia melanocarpa is a suckering shrub, but if you look at the
photo posted by Hans, you will notice it is grafted, presumably to Sorbus
aucuparia, to create a non-suckering tree form. Most Sorbus do not tolerate
heat well, so maybe its the rootstock that will not do well in North
Carolina. There are also wild Aronia melanocarpa throughout the southeast,
usually in wet swampy areas, that would be well adapted to hot humid
climates. You could probably use some other non-suckering rootstock like
hawthorne or mayhaw or pear?, to create a similar tree for the south.

have never seen! But one of the NAFEXers forwarded it to an orchardist
friend in Brno, who explained to me in German (he does not write English)
that the plant in question is indeed an Aronia melanocarpa, but a
particularly vigorous cultivar that trains to a tree easily and has
relatively large fruit, used to make jam, jelly, and as a filling in baked
goods. The fruit is too tart to eat fresh, but people line up outside the
bakery on the day the first pastries filled with this fruit become available
each summer.
