Hans,
I believe you missed a major clue from Jim Nottke's post. Mr. Nottke asked about a TREE. Aronia melanocarpa is a bush: "He noticed a particularly handsome tree, so his host wrote down the name;
Cerny Jerab
Can anyone translate it into English or Latin for me?
Thanks,
Jim Nottke"

English plantnames are often only confusing and nonsense.
Mountain ash is nonsense (in that article) because of wrong copying.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia*:

**Mountain Ash* is a name used for several unrelated trees. It may refer to:

* /Eucalyptus regnans
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_regnans>/, the tallest of
all flowering plants
* /Fraxinus texensis
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraxinus_texensis>/, an Ash tree
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_tree> species in Texas
* Trees in the genus /Sorbus <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorbus>/
in North America (mainly U.S.A.) .
* In Britain it is used exclusively for Sorbus aucuparia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorbus_aucuparia> which is also
commonly known as Rowan <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowan>.

But sometimes even some old Latin names existing parallel. Officially
only one is the right one!
*Aronia **melanocarpa (=**Sorbus melanocarpa)
*
More synonym :/Aronia nigra/, /Sorbus melanocarpa/, /Pyrus melanocarpa/
und /Mespilus arbutifolia/ var./ melanocarpa

I am pretty sure, you are already a fan of this tree!

ciao
hans
