Pomegranates should be grown as a shrub in all but
the very warmest zones (9 &10) where they can be grown as a single
trunk tree. In the wild it is naturally a shrub. It should not be pruned the
first couple of years; then pruned to 5-6 trunks and all suckers removed in all
later years. In the production areas for commercial pomegranate fruit it is grow
with 3 - 6 trunks depending on the grower.
