Charlie,
The peat is current years growth? Did they mention if sludge is used in producing the currents year growth?
I see lots of sludge used in SW Ontario.

Yesterday I called Premier, makers of Pro-Mix consumer mix but also of a
professional line including such as peat-bark mix which are meant to
containerize hardwoods for 2 years or more. I mentioned the allegations
about sludge and they pointed out that their stuff in made in canada, they
tried to send dried manure over the border into usa and couldn't even do it
due to there are still one or two regulations that may actually protect the
puhblic health. Much more than this they said their professional mixes are
made from peat from current year's growth, not mined.
Regarding my extremely vulnerable alder seedling, they said most all mixes
contained at least some lime for ph adjustment and wetting agent and
sometimes fertilizers and not to expose my seedling to any of these.
If you are growing in medium, just get a greenhouse supply house in your
area to drop off professional mixes and pay their charge - then you'll be
safe from mystery ingredients.

Hi Tanis,
If you are environmentally concern about your space, you have to be
very
careful these days with bagged potting soil as some of it contains
compost
made from sewage sludge. For some reason, it is allowed the use of the
word
ORGANIC which leads people to think that it is organic in the sense
that has
become a label of quality and inoccuity.
