Richard, Naomi, et. al.,
Hi, Richard O. here. Wish I could be of some help to you, but alas, my own trees suffer from myriad bark disorders, none of which has, as yet, been positively identified. Most of the trees seem otherwise unaffected, however, and continue to produce respectable fruit. Here's hoping your reddish-brown trees are nothing more than reddish-brown trees.

Interesting Question. RichardO has been growing trees in Maine for a good while. Maybe he will answer.

<x-tad-bigger>Hello Clan;</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger> </x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>My name is Richard Murphy.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Last spring I planted some apple trees in New Sharon, Maine, zone 4.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>This new orchard is in a hay field; lots of open space and sun, with clayish loam.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Last week I inspected the trees for the first time; (I live in Massachusetts.)</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>They all seem to have a reddish-brown color, the bark, that is.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>They all were in silver-tip, and under the outer bark is nice and green.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Is this wind damage? Sunscald? Typical for young trees?</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>My trees here in zone 5 never did this.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Are the Maine trees going to croak?</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Some trees had mouse damage (girdled), stupid ME for not using guards.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Even the non-gridled trees are unusually reddish brown, but fine (green & healthy) inside.</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger> </x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>H E L P ! ! ! Anyone?</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger> </x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Thank you</x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger> </x-tad-bigger>
<x-tad-bigger>Richard</x-tad-bigger>
