Some years ago I read an article that said the way to make tea of wintergreen was to brew it and then let it sit for two or three days to sort of "ferment" to release the flavor elements. It has been a LOOONG time since I read that, and I've never tried it, so I can't verify it.
I will say that I find the berries quite tasty as they grow here.
