Hello,
Do not forget that the myco fungi is perfectly natural and will be found to some degree in all soil. Soil that will not have them is soil that has been turned (plowed, rototilled), chemically fertilized, or certain chemicals used.
The myco fungi you buy are some of the best strains that can be used to inoculate soil/roots and start a colony of GREAT myco fungi around your plantings. At the same time, you can kill off myco fungi by not following myco friendly management practices.
If by chance you already have large populations of good myco fungi in your soil, it is unlikely you will see a large benefit. However, some people with low or no populations of the good myco fungi will see very good results.
I consider inoculating roots with myco fungi "cheap" insurance that the populations of myco fungi I want are being seeded and growing.
Myco fungi can be expensive, but you can propagate it at home. All you need do is grow potted leeks in initially sterile soil, and inoculate the plants roots with a sample of purchased myco fungi. When you need myco fungi remove the plant from the pot, cut off some soil and roots, replace the soil you removed with sterile soil, an replace the leek into the pot. The soil and roots you removed can be used to inoculate other plants.
Leeks are perfect companion plants for growing myco fungi. By cutting back the leeks you can keep the potted plants growing a very long time. I have found that if you replant the leeks bought in supermarkets they will reroot and grow. I only select leeks that still have a few roots. Be sure to use myco friendly practices with the leeks.
Later,
Tom

Even that wouldn't be proof. One would need uninoculated trees to compare with. A control group.
