Rob,

DON'T DO IT! Prunus americana suckers like hell! Everywhere! (except at
the based of the tree, naturally!) I pull out suckers that appear in beds
50, 75, or more feet out from the mother trees. I know they're not
seedlings because I can sometimes pull up 20 feet of root running inches
beneath the soil surface, heading back toward Mama. If I grew only mown
grass for an acre surrounding the trees, perhaps I would not scream quite so
loudly

For us tundra denizens, P. americana may be the only choice; but don't live
in igloos unless your other option is freezing to death.
