Chris,
I have rooted long-stemmed roses from store-bought bouquets past their
prime with a simple old-fashioned method that someone told me their
grandmother used. When the petals were falling off, I dead-headed the
flower, snipped the bottom of the stem at an angle, pushed it deep into the
soil in my garden in a sheltered spot out of the direct sun, with four or
five inches of stem and a few leaves showing, watered it thoroughly, and
then placed a mayonaise jar over it and pushed that down into the soil to
the shoulder. Don't let the leaves touch the inside of the jar, or let the
soil in the area dry out, but otherwise leave it alone for a couple of
months. It's not infallible but it does work with a fair degree of
reliability. I've used it on other cuttings, too. Probably would work even
better if you used rooting hormone and/or micchorrizal (sp?) fungi. Don't
know if there is a patent issue here. dylan
