Lucky,
Based on pictures I have found in books, I am guessing these nuts are from
European beech (F.sylvatica). Until I can compare the features of these
trees to real examples of other beech species, that is what I will call
them. These beech trees line the streets in the Greenwood neighborhood of
Seattle for 5 or more blocks. Only a few of these seemed very productive in
nuts. One interests me in that it is only about 10 feet tall, while the
others productive trees were approaching 30 feet. I'm not sure if it is a
dwarf or just young. I'm thinking of ways I can propagate this specimen.

Mark,
Are those European beech (F.sylvatica) or American beech (F. grandifolia)?
I'm guessing European, based on the size and plumpness. I rarely find
well-filled American beechnuts from any of the trees around town here, and
while there are a few F.grandifolia trees in my woods, I usually don't
think to gather from them at the time when they're ripening, so the wild
critters are probably getting most of the 'good' nuts.
