We grow a lot of osage orange, a few to be used for grafting of Cudrania
tricuspidata as discussed on this list, but most for use in environmental
fencing - for deer and security purposes. We also sell material through our
nursery and provide free material (plants and seeds) to universities and
others conducting research. We have planted over 1 km of "fencing" on our
property and this year will be planting another 2 1/2 km. We are located in
a suburb of Washington, D.C. (Chantilly) and have a) a lot of deer causing a
LOT of damage as we are the last big undeveloped property here, plus of
course, too many people who think undeveloped land is public land....

> Instead of driving around town looking for bags of leaves, I put up a
sign on the corner of my property that says: "Pine Needles Wanted." I used
to ask for leaves and needles and got up to 30 cu. yds. per season. My 1.2
acre garden now has 6 to 14 inches of black dirt atop what used to be
blow-sand. I've stopped raising vegies and am doing predominantly fruit so
now my sign says; "Pine Needles Wanted (no leaves)" and I get all I want,
nothing bagged so I can see what I'm getting. I used to accept from
everyone but only from the landscape maintenance people anymore and they
bring it in by the pick-up truck load.
