Title: Re: [NAFEX] hornets/wasps I had an underground yellowjacket nest (very common species) right in a high traffic area and though I usually leave wasps and hornets alone, I had to get this one out. The non-poison solution was to put a clear gallon glass jar over the entrance. The yellowjackets don't recognize that their entrance is blocked, so they don't try to dig a new one as they would if I had just put a rock over the opening. After about a week, the hive starves. One caveat - be SURE to fill in the nest, even to digging into it, as the empty nest is very likely to attract new occupants the next year. Just plugging the hole won't stop it. I didn't do it the first time and that same nest was reoccupied by the same kind of yellowjackets the next year.
Yes, I know some people think the method is cruel, but it's the safest, least toxic or destructive method I know.

I've found 3 simple & elegant ways to deal w/ ground-nesting
bees/wasps/hornets:
1) If you can ID them, and they are a less common native species, leave
them alone. Maybe build a small fence to keep children and skunks away.
2) Do disturbance activities (mowing, moving mulch, spraying insecticide on
unwanted nests) EARLY in the AM. The cooler the air temperature, the less
mobile the hornet.
3) If you have broken an unwanted nest, just leave it be. If it is in a
rural area, or in a suburb near a preserve, the skunks will find it and
clean it up for you.

Hello,
Are these hornets or yellow-jackets? I have a nest of
yellow-jackets in the mulch under a currant bush, and boy
are they aggressive when you mow near them.
Do hornets make nests in the ground, or in mulch?
I was mowing the other day and got stung. Luckily, I had my
fruit tree spray with me and I sprayed the cloud of insects
clustered near the ground with it. I have not been back to
see the results.
For a small insect, yellow-jackets have a strong bite.
Lots of rain in SW Ontario. My rain gauge indicates 2" this
past week.
