Here's another article from a Japanese newspaper on the cherry bandits:
http://www.asahi.com/english/national/K2003062600444.html
"The Sato Nishiki variety was developed in Yamagata Prefecture, home to 70 percent of the cherries grown in Japan. Sato Nishiki cherries are often described as ``precious red gems'' for their flawless ruby red color and rich juicy sweetness.
"The bandits ignore less-expensive varieties, such as Takasago and Napoleon. Only pricey Sato Nishiki cherries ripe and ready for the market are plucked, police say."
And some tourism-type info on the cherries of Yamagata.

Not much traffic today in this NAFEX group. Here is a something to talk
about...
I read a Reuters story this morning about a Japanese cherry variety called
Sato Nishiki. Here is a link:

People are stealing these cherries in the night from orchards. Why would
someone do this, and what makes this news worthy? Because these fruits are
so valuable that they are known as "red diamonds". A small box of these
sell for $130. They must be really good cherries.
