Title: Re: [NAFEX] What is:  Ya Pears?
There ARE a few Asian pears, pyriform ones, that have intense aromatic flavor, almost like quince.  Problem is, they may or may not be in commerce.  That is, many of the pears we have are not true to name.  Most of the Ya Li is not what the Chinese call Ya Li.  I've had the true one at the NCGR in Corvallis and it had a very distinct flavor.  Another one with distinct (but different from quince) is Chojuro.

I agree with Dean that Ya Li and similar Asian pears have very little
flavor, whether that is because they are picked early for shipping or
whether it is inherent in the variety I don't know.
Some of the apple-shaped pears, eaten fresh off the tree, are very good.
