I'll second (or third) the notion that it is likely what we know as
Ya-li' - pyriform, green to yellow, good size - harvest around oct 1,
here - I had several trees (zone 5, northern IN) - not my favorite either,
have not found a time of harvest such that it achieves good flavor - early,
very bland - - more ripe, a rather 'petroleum' flavor - perhaps in a
different climate it would be different - I've topworked all but a couple -
easy to grow, spur-y precocious tree, main problem is thinning fruit, a
four step process to achieve good results here -
culturally, less disease/insect pressure than apples, but the trees seem
less cold hardy than most 'standard' pear varieties -
I think I could stir up a picture of 'Ya-li' and I know I have some of
'Korean giant' (my favorite) - can't post them here, but could in 'Over the
Fence' - (you do hang around there, don't you?) I think the species is
definately worth growing, but wouldn't recommend 'Ya-li' -
