I meant, it is dry during the growing season. Snow over the winter would
make for soil moisture, but if the moisture all came that way, the humidity
during the actual growin season could still be low, with no rain. The
timing of the moisture is all-important. Also, if the trees have lots of
snow cover in winter, they may be less cold hardy than they seem, since the
snow would insulate them.
Not trying to discourage anyone, just that I've gone this route with
other plants. Looking for plants that might be unusually cold hardy, late
blooming, or the like, just to find that specific climate in the native area
made the plants behave differently than in other areas.
