I checked with the OS extension service and the only thing they could come up with is that they are extremely sensitive to herbacides. They are used as indicator trees in determining the presence of herbacides. I had sprayed roundup and 2-4-D in their vicinity this spring. I have sprayed in other years too, but maybe this year they were more susceptible. No spray has ever gotten on them directly though.
I have been hoping to get some fruit but none so far. Maybe all my trees are male.
The ES said they are not popular trees in our area because of the extremely slow growth.
They know of 5 trees at a local country club and that is it.

I've always been fascinated by the Ginko fruit, nothing less than a
teenager's basketball shoes after a season of hard playing can match the
smell.
Here in South Carolina the trees are commercially reared for their
leaves. They are harvested with specialized combines by the ton for the
herb markets. More profitable than peanuts and cotton, I've heard.
Maybe Clemson University has some info. Don't let them steer you into
peaches 'cause that is where they shine. (and no where else except
Tigers football).
Ginko must be tough, it one of the the most primitive trees and survives
the nutrient raped soil of the cotton plantations here. My guess is that
you have a moisture problem. Too much water is as bad as not enough
water in some cases.
