Hi........
I am a resident of the Canadian island province of Newfoundland, and
here, Rubus chamaemorus is the berry we commonly refer to as Bakeapple. A
low growing plant of the acidic peatlands. Each plant bears a single "berry".
There is a commercial harvest, with berries retailing for approximately
$40. per gallon! I have never heard of "a national fruit" as such, but at
these prices, this could be one!

George Brinson, Carmanville, NF - where "bakeapples" are two months to
blossom time.
