I have been using TreeEssentials Tubex/SuperTubes tree guards for a
number of years to get the apple trees up and going. They have been
good for me, allowing the trees to get up five feet or so without the
weekly pruning by deer and moose. The comparison with wire has been
remarkable for more growth, etc. I am trying to get the trees tall
enough so the deer/moose can't completely prune them.

However I am in zone 3-4 with a lot of wind and snow and not a lot of
hot weather in the summer
