Irv, if there aren’t more obvious locations locally where training or joint training is allowed, perhaps you can use the successful model used by others around the country. They are connecting with owners of larger acreage for training locations.

The ability to work with other resource types requires the ability to practice or exercise with those types.  In some cases, such as aircraft, cost per hour is prohibitive, and in others non-emergency use is prohibited.  In Pennsylvania and NJ use of an ATV off the owner’s property is strictly prohibited.  The ATV must be registered, titled, and insured as a motor vehicle is, except it is not street legal.  It can only be operated on land where the landowner has given permission, the municipality permits operation, or on a trail designated for ATV use in season.  This makes it difficult to exercise with ATV’s and in some cases bicycles which are banned from soft surface horse trails in state parks and many national parks in this area.  This would also apply to dirt bikes, powered or unpowered, and other resources.  It also makes it difficult for these resources to train on their own in this area.  Ever try training an air scent dog on a 6 foot leash?  Some parks still require all dogs to be leashed, and some federal rules still require 6 foot leads as published. This can really make your training day.

First, read the book(s), then figure out how to exercise the troops to build the skills needed to carry out the tactics and strategies you need to be a successful searcher.

Irv and Tomi’ provided some good general information. Also consider that MSAR partners very well with some resources, incident and even mission-specific. Most commonly you’ll find MSAR partnered with Quads/ATV or other smaller wheeled vehicles. There is an increasing number of MSAR partnering very advantageously with SAR Dogs as complementary resources using the senses. Where there are riders and mounts trained and equipped for backcountry packing there are other opportunities.

I am looking for specific search strategies for mounted SAR if anyone has that type of protocol in their standards.

Thanks,
