Irv wrote: The point, which seems to go by you repeatedly is, if you can’t practice frequently and easily with other resources you will be forced to learn how they work and how good they are when they show up on a job, which is the worst time to have to learn about them.

I think it is safe to say I understand the value of training.  ;-)

You started very well then wandered far away from answering the original question, Irv.  The person asking was looking for information about search strategies, not reasons why you have problems working with other resources in PA … which may or may not apply in other areas. (You mention difficulties finding locations for MSAR to train with ATV or with SAR dogs … locally we don’t have that problem.) Your response leaves me to assume you don’t have experience partnering MSAR with ATV or SAR Dogs. I hope that situation changes for you at some point. Partnering with the other resource types when it is advantageous is an effective strategy and a strength for MSAR.

Regardless,  even if potential for partnering with certain resources is more limited in an operational area, it is a good idea to at least understand the fundamentals of how that partnering works. At some point the opportunity may arise to take advantage of that kind of partnering, and the rider needs to understand how/why it works so it can be explained to the other resource and to management, so it can be applied more effectively.
