Irv, They found a missing
body. Be glad. Pam Ogg From: msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of IRVIN LICHTENSTEIN The obvious is always interesting. An
exposed body, near where the vehicle was recovered? The only question is how it
magically appeared after the initial search. It is more likely the area was not
searched initially (or ever). The use of aircraft in dense foliage is not
recommended, even with FLIR and the current drought in Over 20 years ago the level of effort a
manager would put into an area before moving on during the initial operation
was that sufficient to raise the probability of detection to 80% or
higher. This meant 3 passes with 3 different resources from 3 different
directions. And nobody got credit for more than 50%. This meant clue detection
was around 50% the first pass, raised to a cumulative 75% after the second
effort, and finished off at 87.5 % by the third. In a really sticky area
you might need more manpower or more technology to get there. And there is
still that 20% you missed. The older the job the less likely a find will be
made and recoveries are hard on the people involved. One of the jobs in state park near here
involved a college age man with self destructive problems. His girl had left
him, etc. his family didn’t report him missing for 3 days so when his car
was found it was an emergency dispatch (less than 24 hours on the missing
sheet). Four tracking dog teams independently tracked him out of the
area, hasty teams cleared trails all night long,
a horse patrol found nothing. After over 18 hours of intense overnight effort
(and discovering that the car had been there 3 days or more based on overnight
parking reports) a relocation of effort was decided on. The body was
found hanging from a deer stand, about 20 feet overhead in dense woods, that
fall, less than 100 yards from a trail. Irv Lichtenstein From: msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Susan Wright Don't know how many of you were
aware of this missing person. Although horses were not used in this
search, I find Tim Miller's comments (Texas EquuSearch) very interesting. |
