To echo Chris-- it is not just your life and your mount's life, but your
task team members' lives, the other searchers' lives, and the subject's
life.
When riding search you are searching, not riding. This requires a very
attentive mount who will communicate what he finds to you and warn you of
dangers on the trail. My mount of 20 years is classed as green broke (he
was saddle broke by an Amishman with a green 2x4 about 5 minutes before he
sold him to me) and will not tolerate fools lightly, but he knows how to
search with all his senses and he knows how to tell me when something is
wrong and needs attention.
