There are many individual skills used in SAR-- tracking, clue detection and
awareness, search management, various ICS functions, organizational
functions. These are fairly generic to both foot and mounted search.
A patrol rider has to be able to read the beat and this awareness can then
be used to expand the rider's outlook on a SAR assignment. The most
efficient use of resources is the goal. If the searcher is clue aware,
alert, and willing to work in a small task team (2-3) a mounted searcher can
cover a lot of territory with high efficiencies.

Again, similar to a beat officer being briefed by detectives who have a
broader view and more background information, the searcher looks for clues
of the subject's passage or presence. This often requires other than a line
abreast parade through the area.
